We’re a month into the new semester now (welcome!), and as things settle down and everyone eases into their coursework, either as a student or faculty member, it’s nice to get a reminder every now and then that choosing Sociology (or Social Work!) is a good choice and can lead to important work.
One such example is a hometown boy – Matthew Desmond. He grew up in Flagstaff and did his undergrad at ASU before heading out to Madison, WI, where he earned his Ph.D. He’s now an Associate Professor of Sociology & Social Studies in the Sociology Department at Harvard University, and was recently named a MacArthur Fellow by the MacArthur Foundation. He spent months living in Milwaukee studying eviction and the effects of poverty (see the link below to a short video and article).
So, the next time someone asks you why you study Sociology and what good can a Sociology Degree do – here’s just one of many answers!
